INTRODUCTION
Dear Visitor:
If you are visiting this site with the view to avail my services as a psychotherapist or as a marriage and family therapist, I hope that this introduction serves as the first step towards establishing a mutually trusting, respectful, and beneficial, professional relationship.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Texas. I am in my early sixties and have been practicing this profession for more than fifteen years.
My philosophy is to be as accommodative as possible to my clients’ needs and keep the counseling process as relaxed as possible. Thus, I take appointments at virtually any time – including late evenings and weekends. I see my clients mostly at my office in west Houston; however, if necessary I meet them in their homes or at another mutually convenient place. I also remain available to converse on the phone – sometimes even doing major therapeutic work this way. My fees are very reasonable and I maintain an accommodative attitude in this respect as well.
I am originally from India and grew up in a middle class family of seven people in a small city of the state of Gujarat. After my graduation in chemical engineering from the University of Bombay, I worked for about twelve years in India. During this time, I married, had my only son, and experienced and observed the cultural, social, and family life of India.
I migrated to the United States in 1980 and decided to settle in Houston. After working for a few years as a chemical engineer, I slowly and deliberately changed my career. My wife and I owned and operated a Montessori preschool for more than a decade. This gave me a deeper and wider understanding of children of all ages and issues related to parenting as well as closer associations with American families from varying backgrounds. This also motivated me to pursue my graduate study in psychological counseling and to take the plunge into my current profession.
My work as a Psychological Counselor and Marriage & Family Therapist allows me the opportunity to employ my complete self towards my deepest motivation – that is to be instrumental in resolving truly human problems.
Some of the issues that I have dealt with in my practice are: self-identity and clarification of the life goals, job and career related issues, parenting of young children, problems of teenagers and young adults, premarital confusion and hurdles, marital conflict, extra-marital affairs, sexuality, family types and dynamics, inter-racial marriage, and cultural conflicts and blending. I have also worked with psychological difficulties – such as anxiety, depression, bipolar, anger, ADHD, and many others.
Some of my other professional activities include: Conducted workshops on topics such as Caring Communication, Enhancing Parenting Skill, How to Deal with Difficult People, Cultural Issues faced by People from South Asia, Problems Faced by Asian Indian Youth in America, and Eastern Spiritual Beliefs and Mental Health. Pursued advanced training in marriage and family therapy at Houston-Galveston Institute. Served as a member for few years on the board of the Houston Licensed Professional Counselors Association.
My clients come from all ethnic backgrounds including main stream Americans. They include people from all ages ranging from preschoolers to seniors in nursing homes, from all socio-economic backgrounds ranging from poor, single-mom households to highly educated and rich families. I have also worked with people on the fringes, such as juvenile delinquents, homosexuals, abused spouses, and people with psychological abnormalities.
However, my own background makes me especially suitable to understand and help Asian-American families – particularly people from the Indian subcontinent. In addition to English, I can converse in South Asian languages – such as Hindi and Gujarati. I can also understand some Urdu.
To my counseling work, I not only bring my therapeutic skills acquired from my training and work experiences, but the depth and breath that I derive from my life experiences in India and the United States along with the knowledge and clarity that I am blessed to have from my religious and spiritual heritage. While I derive my faith from the Hindu religion, I have an earnest interest in studying and understanding the essential teachings of all major religions. I find it very useful to understand and employ my clients’ faith and belief system in looking at and resolving their issues.
My therapeutic approach is essentially client-centered. I depend on my clients and place their ideas above mine. I believe that a client will always work on their own goals – thus, I set goals essentially as they want. I greatly value the therapeutic relationship with my clients, and do not consider it as merely a means to an end. I give great importance to the role of empathy, genuineness, understanding, and mutual acceptance. I use collaborative dialogue – which, on the surface, appears just like a normal conversation. I may also employ tools from cognitive behavioral techniques, family system theory, play therapy, relaxation techniques, and other resources as and when found useful and acceptable to my clients.
Finally, I have faced many of my clients’ problems in my own life – sometimes resolved positively and sometimes not. But one thing has become very clear to me – that these personal issues baffle us much more than the problems that we face in the outside world. Facing and resolving these problems can prove to be both challenging and rewarding as we work to enhance the harmony in our lives.
Well, now you know me a bit! Contact me and give me a chance to know you as well.
Sincerely, Kirit N. Mehta
